Knitted Gifts

Some of my gift knitting is done—I love that feeling of having accomplished a goal. Now I have more time to finish some of my knitted donation projects.

These are Irish Hiking scarves for one of my husband’s brothers and his wife. My husband’s family is very Celtic so anything on these lines is of great interest to them.

I used the free pattern from Hello Yarn.

They’re made of cotton because I discovered not one person in our family will wear wool. Last year I made my mother-in-law the same scarf in wool before discovering her wool allergy and had to scramble at the last minute to make another one in cotton.

Discovering her allergy was kind of funny in a way. I rushed to the yarn shop the very next morning and was there when they unlocked the door. I stumbled in and loudly exclaimed, “I have a knitting emergency!” After explaining the problem, they helped me find some great nubby cotton yarn to use.

There’s always an Irish Hiking Scarf in the works at my house. I keep trying to make one for myself but then someone will come along and drool all over it, “Oh, I just love that scarf.” And I give it to them.

It’s selfish, but I’m secretly working on one for myself—we’ll see how long that lasts.

  1. Oh, June! Those are SO beautiful. I can't wait to figure out how to make the cable. It looks a little complicated, but I'm not one to shy away from a challenge. My first scarf is almost done, but not nearly as gorgeous as these. You certainly deserve one for yourself! If you don't allow yourself one, I will make you a scarf and send it to you. No guarantee it will be nice though. LOL!

  2. Well, that is a fine scarf; I can see why everyone tries to snatch it right out of your knitting hands. :) However, it is NOT selfish to make something for yourself once in a while. Haven't you earned at least that?!

  3. ooooohhhh these are pretty!!!! Once I'm out of my Noro-entrelac-scarf-as-gifts phase I may have to start on THESE as gifts!!! And maybe they'll help me master the needleless cabling technique. Do you use it?

  4. I think the scarves are beautiful! The presents that are the most difficult to give away are the best kind of giving.

I'll tell you a secret... I don't know how to knit a cable. I've never tried. We have several lovely oatmeal afghans with lots of cables that my mom knit. But she's no longer here to teach me, so I suppose I should march on down to our local knitting shop and say "Help!"
    Thanks for the nudge!

  5. They are so gorgeous! And cotton is a great idea... so much softer. I hope you make it through your own scarf quickly so you can enjoy it :)

  7. Everything you do is just beautiful. I would love it if you would tell those of us who only know you through your blog, how long you have been doing all of these various crafts and how you got started in them. Did you learn through classes or from family? Your creations are not only beautiful, but there always seems to be a personal touch that makes them even more special. It is a joy to read your blog each day.
