We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton on Lake Las Vegas, a hotel sadly slated for closure on May 2. The staff treated us like royalty and the pampering was a welcome relief.

We spent time in various casinos on the Las Vegas strip. I love the brightly-colored parasols hanging in the Bellagio. This is what I’d call the plastic fantastic part of our trip; although superficial in many ways, it’s still a lot of fun.

To counter the glitz of the Strip, we spent a day touring almost the entire Death Valley area straddling California and Nevada. Mid-day had us at Furnace Creek, CA enjoying lunch.

After viewing the amazing sand dunes and mountainous formations, we ventured to Badwater Basin to see Death Valley’s salt pan.

Sodium Chloride, better known as table salt, makes up most of the salt basin here. Other evaporative minerals here include calcite, gypsum, and borax.
You’ve heard of 20 Mule Team Borax, a key ingredient used in laundry products. Death Valley was the origin of the name when the famous mule teams pulled massive wagons hauling borax for 10 grueling days from the Harmony Borax Works near Furnace Creek to the railhead near Mojave.

Hi June, Sounds like you had a much needed trip! I'm so glad. How are you feeling? I could use a trip like that after my past week.
ReplyDeleteThose are neat salt pictures. I love borax. I use it for my laundry and to clean my toilet.
Hope you have a great, relaxing weekend.
Sounds like you had a great getaway June! We lived in Lancaster, on the other side of the desert for awhile when I was a little girl. I'd love to go back and see what it's like now. I remember always being curious about borax as a little girl when we made frequent drives from Utah to CA, 'cause it was such an interesting sounding word! Hope you're back home now and still being pampered!
ReplyDeleteEven though looking up at those fab parasols would give me a huge pain in the neck, they would make me smile :0)
ReplyDeleteThe flower appearance of those parasols is so bright and cheerful! Thanks for the info about borax - there's so much to learn in this world!
ReplyDeleteOh! I didn't realize that Ritz was closing - I actually stayed there a few years ago when it was first opening. Weird.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you got out for some much-needed distraction. And at a time of the year when you can go to Death Valley without dealing with the "death" part ;)
What a nice husband you have and what a fun get-away. I love the history lesson on 20 Mule Team Borax. I thought the name had something to do with having "the power of 20 mules pulling out the stains!"
ReplyDeleteJody
I'm so glad you had a nice trip from Vegas, and a respite from all your appointments. I know what it's like to have doctor fatigue.
ReplyDeleteHugs and love.
What a nice get away! We made a wrong turn once driving back to AZ from NV and ended up in Death Valley...it was a fascinating detour!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that fact about Borax, June! How interesting!
Wow! That is a contrast! And I think being out in the Death Valley knowing I could tuck in at the Ritz would be ahhhwesome. :)
ReplyDeleteGlad it was such a sweet trip!
