Jane Austen Inspired Gifts

"I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! -- When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." ~ Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice)

Like many people, I quite adore Jane Austen. Giving a gift of one of her books is an honor as well as homage to Jane’s cleverness. But wrapping the book in paper is too simple, so I sought a special means of presentation and was rewarded by finding The Sampler Girl's Jane Austen Book Bag project, one of numerous Jane Austen-inspired patterns she offers.

The first part is cross-stitching the Jane Austen piece on 32-count linen (over one thread), then you follow the directions to sew the book pocket itself. The edging you see in the photo is also the lining fabric.

I added one little project to the book bag by making a matching case for reading glasses. Now all that’s needed is a bookmark and the total gift package is done.

"There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature." — Jane Austen (Northanger Abbey)

Jane Austen... the name, alone, makes me feel light-headed. I still haven't recovered from the trauma of high school English classes, where Jane Austen was forced down my throat over and over again by an evil teacher. Had my teacher been kinder and gentler, perhaps I would've grown to love Jane Austen... but my teacher's abrasive attituded has tainted poor Jane Austen forever for me.

This is a wonderful gift idea. I like the idea of adding a pocket for reading glasses too! I'm always looking for mine these days. It's one of the things that I'm NOT enjoying about getting older.
