Where Mermaids Stand

Wednesday was the one year anniversary of my blog. I posted my blog’s purpose the very first day as shown in the picture below.

Delamare, 2001, text added by me

She intended to take her place wherever mermaids fit into the scheme of things. “Where do the mermaids stand? All of those who are different, those who do not fit the boxes and the pigeonholes?” “Answer that question,” wrote Fulghum, “And you can build a school, a nation, or a whole world.” As [a] very wise young woman said, “Diversity, like anything worth having, requires effort — effort to learn about and respect difference, to be compassionate with one another, to cherish our own identity, and to accept unconditionally the same in others.”

I’ve spent the year doing just what I set out to do—celebrating life in a creative way. My blog year began with a tutorial offering and ends with the tutorial series posted this week. They are my gifts to those of you who’ve kindly taken the time to leave encouraging comments over this year.

Now it’s time to say goodbye. I’m slipping off my sandals and assuming my mermaid persona to seek new adventures in life. Thank you for everything.

Are you really leaving? I am so sad. But I understand the need to move on and concentrate on other areas of life and of living. You have added SO much joy and meaning in big and little ways to my life every day you posted for the past year.

You are loved.

June - I'm so sad that I won't read your blog daily. You have inspired me so much and it has been always nice to hear from you. Will you still keep on flickr or are you moving away from the Internet?

Well, my sweet Junie Moon, I've written to you personally, so you know how much I love you and appreciate you exactly as you are. You make such a difference in this world!

Thank you for all you've shared and taught here, and most especially, thank you for your generosity of spirit, your positive energy, and for inspiring me to be exactly who I am too.

In response to whether I will continue sharing photos on Flickr, my answer is no and here’s why.

Flickr is not having a profitable time and is working on an effort to allow us to sell our photos for which they’ll get some income. While I’m not adverse to anyone making money, I believe it should be aboveboard in the way it’s handled. While Flickr is sorting all this out, they recently sold photos without permission of the original photographers. Until their process is worked out, there’s going to continue to be a problem. I do not think that my photos are so outstanding that people want to steal them but they are MY photos. I paid for a Flickr Pro account and trusted in the copyright fine print which means there’s a loophole somewhere. As I’m not a lawyer and really don’t want to spend hours and hours of my life trying to work out the fine print issues, I simply removed all of my photos and cancelled my account.

Should you wish to read more about this, do a Google search. Here are a couple of links you can read in considering what you want to do about this problem: http://www.jmg-galleries.com/blog/2008/07/07/how-every-flickr-photo-ended-up-on-sale-this-weekend/ and http://www.abouttheimage.com/3602/image_thief_steals_photos_from_flickr_to_sell_on_istockphoto/author3/

Oh June! I am so sad to read this! :-( This is the third blog that enjoyed where the blogger has decided to call it quits. BUT.... I fully understand that blogging can be time consuming and if it isn't fun and enriching to our lives why continue?

I wish you the very best in your next creative venture and I hope you'll stay in touch!

Oh I will miss you so much!!! You inspired me SO much, and kept me in the loop of fabulous charities (although I could never get that leper bandage to stay the same gauge). You are such an amazing, talented person. I am an awful blogger but you were still always so sweet to me, which I personally appreciated so much.
That said those are MY reasons I want you to keep blogging, which I know is selfish. I wish you the best on your next journey.
Stay Fabulous!

Dear June- I wanted you to know how much inspiration you and your blog have given me this past year. I have been on a trend in the past several years to use crafting as a replacement for unhealthy habits in my life. That had been going OK- but there was something missing in what I was doing. Your blog has been a great example of how you use your crafting to benefit others- either through charity fund raisin or on the more "local" scale in making things for friends. The element that I was missing before was how to use crafting to help both myself and others. Thank you so much for showing me the way.

Sincerely, Sid Simpson

Hi again dear Junie Moon

I posted this to your blog last Oct:

Thank you for asking us to think about our deeds - it helped me to shine a little light on them instead of hurrying on to the next thing to do. It also helped me realize there were a few coulda woulda shoulda opportunities for good deeds that I let pass by.

You raised my awareness and its stuck with me. Thanks again

oh no. Oh June I will miss you so. You have been such an inspiration in creativity. I've taken up many of the creative things I had once laid down for decades. You've inspired me and always with grace and charm. I've grown to love the person behind the blog. You are so talented and I love the watercolour you've painted for us. Oh June, I'm sorry you are closing down this inspirational venue. May all your creative pursuits be full of joy, fulfillment, and the grace that you always bring with them. You're one of a kind my dear.

I'm going to go save some of your tutorials to my hard drive because I'm just learning how to sew and your instructions are awesome!

I hope all is well with you!
