Craft:Along Projects for March

Both of my projects for Finny and Donk's March 2009 Craft:Along are done. One is sewing and the other a culinary [mis]adventure.

Project 1: Crooked Coasters

In her post about this part of March’s craft-along, Finny said, “I suppose if you wanted to get all supah crafty you could make a round crooked coaster and call it a pizza coaster and put your 5 minute pizza dough pizza right on it, but I'm not saying you have to.”

I took that as a challenge and made mine round, but I’m not putting pizza on it—sorry, Finny. I’ve sewn simple crooked circles around the circle-print fabric coasters and edged them with bias tape made using a different color of fabric in the same print.

It’s pretty evident the “round” theme has been much utilized in my project. I do aspire to be “supah crafty”.

Project 2: Five-Minute Pizza Dough

Since I’ve already tried the No Knead Pizza
Dough, this part of the March Craft:Along project seemed a perfect opportunity to compare the two recipes.

The No Knead recipe resulted in a product moist and sticky. The Five-Minute Pizza Dough recipe seemed awfully dry. All will be well, I thought, and patiently waited out the prescribed 2 to 3 hours rise time.

  • 12:30 p.m.: Dough set out to rise per instructions.
  • 3:04 p.m.: Dough cracked, taking on appearance of anemic petrified brains but not rising. Worry ensues.
  • 4:57 p.m.: Not rising. Major worry.
  • 6:03 p.m.: Beyond worry; something I’ve done is wrong.
  • 6:04 p.m.: Resort to Plan B.
Plan B

Chimichanga dinners brought home from Macayo’s by my hungry husband. No more worries, but it does negate my imagined status as “supah crafty”.

Oh no - now I have fear of the pizza dough! If yeast is going to have a catastrophic failure, it's going to be in my kitchen for some reason.

I mean, I'll still try it, but yikes.

Even though I do love AND MISS Macayo's. I'll assume you have the big margarita glass/mug? I think I still have mine from college.

Cute round coasters! You brave gal with your make-it-yourself bias tape. You ARE supah crafty!

I'm with Finny: You are most definitely supah crafty, June! :)

There is nothing more disappointing than stubborn dough, especially if it's the centerpiece of the meal! However, those chimichangas do look pretty delish, so at least dinner was saved.

Is there such a thing as bad yeast? I never really though of yeast in terms of good and bad. Maybe it was downright evil yeast. I'm glad you had a backup plan for dinner.

Oh no too bad about your pizza dough! Did you roll the dough in some oil and cover it with a tea towel and keep it away from drafts while it rose? Those oare the only things I can think of that could have helped.

Your coasters are darling!
