Car Seatbelt Sleeves Tutorial Revisited

Two years ago, I wrote a tutorial for making your own Car Seatbelt Sleeves. They protect my neck from chafing or potential decapitation from the seatbelt slicing through my neck.

The set I made back then is worn out now, so I’ve made a new pair using Heather Ross’ Mendocino line. Life is good when mermaids cheerfully frolic about without a care in the world.

Using pieces of my hoarded collection of mermaid fabrics meant for a future quilt actually gives me palpitations. I mitigated the impact by backing this new pair of seatbelt sleeves with a tiny checked fabric in my stash.

I love my new seatbelt sleeves. If my heart can bear the loss from my treasured stash, I think I’ll re-make some other car accessories that are wearing out, too.

You can see an embroidered set and a children’s version here.

Uncanny! I was just thinking today that I needed to do something about the car seat belt rubbing against my neck (it's finally warm enough here to ditch the jacket). This is going to be perfect! Thanks for the tutorial.

"If my heart can bear the loss from my treasured stash" -- you always make me smile June -- that mermaid fabric is just perfect for you -- I can just imagine how gut-wrenching it was to use it!

Thank you for the reminder that I need to add these to my "make someday soon" list. I can't stand having the belt across my neck (nor does the idea of "submarining" appeal to me!).

Good for you for cutting into your beloved mermaid collection! Now at least you can look at it in use every single day right now, right? Your future quilt will be wonderful still, I'm sure. :)

This is SUCH a great idea. I am constantly pulling that belt away from my neck/chest!

I used to have those for my kids when they were younger. I've never thought of using them myself. I'm short, so I should :)

I could use one of those across the lap belt. Man, when I have to go pee, the lap belt cuts across my waist and makes the urge unbearable. oddly, the lap belt only cuts into me when I have to pee... why is that?

This is fantastic, especially when you need to go on long drives or hard ones (the kind where you have to change lanes a few times and crane your neck around...), and for passengers who fall asleep, whether children or adults.

In fact, you could make these extra cushiony for dozing-inclined passengers! SUPER idea!

The mediafire link seems to be down. Can you let me know when it's back up?

Your comment doesn't include an email to which I can respond. I just checked the link and it's working fine, the PDF document popped right up. Make sure to look on the left side of the page where you click to download the file.
