Summer Walking Program

All the cooking, partying, and vacationing going on this summer are not helping me meet my health goal set at the beginning of the year. It’s my own fault. More active movement is needed in my life, plain and simple.

Since I’m not young and am definitely out of any semblance of shape, walking is a good activity with which to start. Following advice from Active.com, I’m trying their beginner Summer Walking Program.

Summer is deadly here in Tucson, so I’ll have to go out very early in the morning. That’s a good idea anyway as there’s something motivating about a fresh new day ahead.

While picking up a prescription at Albertson’s recently, I saw a walking program card on their counter as a giveaway which contains a number of helpful tips. Click on each picture to enlarge and print if you’d like to use their program.

Here’s another great tool recently featured on One Pretty Thing, a free printable Healthy Living Goals List created by Baca Creative.

I’ve got to figure out how to keep this stuff on my computer to avoid actually handling paper considering my allergy issue. Some things can’t be avoided, I guess.

An active person is supposed to be able to walk 10,000 steps per day. Doesn’t that sound daunting? Sitting here writing about it isn’t going to get me anywhere, so I’m clipping on my little pedometer and heading out the door.

Round is a shape. :o)

Good luck to you on your program. Is your allergy getting worse, or are you just more actively avoiding it now?

Good luck to you! Might I suggest, if you have an iPod Nano or iTouch you look into the Nike+ sensor. I have it and love it. I use it to track my pace, the miles I have walks and so on. You can upload all of that information to their website and even customize a program for yourself. It is all paperless.

Blessings and good luck on your fitness quest.

I walk at a fast pace for three miles every morning in a local park's walking trail. I can't say it has helped me lose weight but it has kept me limber and energetic. Now if I could only avoid "sweets" lol!

Walking with a friend makes those miles fly by...try to find someone to walk with.

For tracking your progress online, try dailymile.com. I love listening to podcasts while I walk or run. It really make the time pass quickly.

Good for you!! I've found out about an aerobics program at the local pool I'm planning to try.

No offense June, but your preparation for walking wore me out! I take an hour and a half "walking meditation" hike every morning, leaving music, people and the world behind. SO good for the soul. The past few days I've shared the hillsides with a flock of 550 sheep!

I like to hike in the morning before it gets too warm. Mostly, I'd suggest finding a place you really enjoy spending time.

That looks like an excellent program. I'm tempted to send it to friends who are looking to get out and about during the nicer months and get in shape.

Good for you! Keep it up! And enjoy those early mornings. I love to be out and active first thing. It starts the whole day off right. As long as I'm not nearly hit by a car. Which happens more frequently than I'd like.

Be careful!

You will be amazed at how walking becomes an important daily ritual that not only is good for your body, but your mind as well. The miles add up fast. It is a struggle to walk in the heat (it was 103 her yesterday), but evening walks are allowed! ;-) Cheers!
