Blessings Friday: Robert Frost and Blueberries

"You ought to have seen what I saw on my way
To the village, through Mortenson's pasture to-day:
Blueberries as big as the end of your thumb,
Real sky-blue, and heavy, and ready to drum
In the cavernous pail of the first one to come!
And all ripe together, not some of them green
And some of them ripe! You ought to have seen
!"

Robert Frost ~ Blueberries excerpt from North of Boston, 1914

I’ve always loved Robert Frost’s poetry. Old favorites include Fire and Ice, Mending Wall, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, and The Road Not Taken (you can hear this one as an actual audio recording of Robert Frost here).

Frost’s poem prompted me to buy blueberries yesterday afternoon. My blueberry craving was further encouraged by an article in the July/August issue of Health magazine lauding the healthy benefits of blueberries: skin reviver, bladder aid, cancer blocker, and brain food.

The article includes a skin scrub recipe using these little fruits from The Cliff House Resort and Spa in Ogunquit, Maine—which, by the way, offers a Maine blueberry pedicure as one of their summer treats.

The blueberries don’t seem to be fated for use in the skin scrub recipe as I keep popping the tasty little things in my mouth. Simple pleasures are often the best.

simple pleasures indeed!
June, I am one of those [weird maybe] people who find it deplorable that people are starving or at a minimum are malnourished yet spas and such use perfectly edible and nutritious food for such frivolous purposes. Not a knock at all on your lovely post, just a comment on society.
My mother was also a real fan of Robert Frost's poetry and, fortunately, as a result of her admiration for his work, I too have carried that love on in my generation. Thank you for such a lovely -- delicious -- post!

Oooh, Junie Moon -- thanks for the link to the audio recording -- I LOVE that poem and it was so fun to hear Robert Frost reading it. Isn't the internet just the most amazing thing???

Hi June

I am an advid blueberry devourer and a Robert Frost poetry lover!
You used a nice photo of him ... so often he is shown in his later years.

I loved hearing his unique New England accent...almost as unusual as mine! ;-)

I just bought a pint of the little yummies myself yesterday and will be enjoying them this morning for breakfast with some vanilla yogurt and walnuts! MMMMM. They would never make it into a scrub here either, lol!
